Our family recently traveled to Slovenia for a two week road trip around the country. While we found many great resources on the main tourist sites, we had a really hard time learning more about the Logar Valley. On our trip, we even met some Slovenians that had never heard of it, despite it being one of the most beautiful locations we visited. Keep reading for a complete guide of everything you need to know to visit the Logar Valley, also known as Logarska Dolina.

Where is the Logar Valley?

The Logar Valley is a glacial valley located in the Northern part of Slovenia on the border of Austria. It is a 1.5 hour drive from Ljubljana and a car is necessary to visit. While the nearest town is Solcava, we recommend focusing your time in the valley itself. You will need to pay a toll to enter the valley.

Tourist Farms in Logar Valley

Where to stay in the Logar Valley

Tourist farms exist all over Slovenia, and there are several tourist farms located in the valley. These farms are a fun opportunity to play with some farm animals and eat homemade Slovenian meals. Hotel Plesnik is the largest accommodation in the area, but any tourist farms within a mile or so will be in a great location in the Valley.

What to do in the Logar Valley

The Solcava Panoramic Road– This panoramic road, while stunning, is not clearly marked. Be sure to stop at the Rinka Center in Solcava to pick up a map- we took the green route. The road will take you pass stunning viewpoints, a beautiful chapel, and a few tourist farms selling local food items. We bought some delicious jam from one home, and cheese from another.

The paper map will give you the most up to date information about stops along the route. If you don’t have 2-3 hours to spend doing the full drive, we recommend you do the drive in reverse. The last viewpoint (Pastirkovo Lookout Point) was the most stunning, by far.

Our favorite stops along the route were:

  • #5- Holy Spirit Church
  • #8- Pastirkovo Lookout

Hike to Slap Rinka (Rinka Waterfall)– Drive to the very end of the valley, past all the tourist farms, to reach the parking lot and trailhead for Slap Rinka. The trail will take you on a 1 mile hike up a steep and slippery path to reach Slap Rinka, a tall waterfall with a swimming pool at the bottom. We visited in late September, and it was far too cold for swimming, but there is a cafe next to the waterfall with a delicious blueberry brandy.

Visit Robanov kot– Logar Valley is not the only valley in the area- it is one of three. You can visit neighboring Robanov Kot to see more stunning alpine views. Park at Gov-Vrsnik tourist farm and hike into the valley, where no cars are allowed. The trail through the valley takes about an hour to reach the Roban dairy farm. The farm is only open during certain parts of the year, so check before you go.

Where to eat in the Logar Valley

The Logar Valley is certainly not a foodie destination. There are a few small restaurants in Solcava, but none within the valley itself. Most visitors eat breakfast and dinner at their tourist farm.

What to pack for your trip to the Logar Valley

Be sure to bring warm clothes, as the Logar Valley is one of the colder destinations in Slovenia. When we visited in the middle of September, the morning and evening temperatures reached into the 30s and 40s Fahrenheit. When traveling, we love to bring a packable puffer jacket to keep us warm without taking up a lot of space in our carry on bags.

Protect Your Trip

If the COVID-19 pandemic has taught us anything, it is that insurance is necessary to protect our travel investments and keep our family safe on the road. Depending on the policy that you choose, travel insurance can protect your family in the event of medical emergencies and canceled trips. It also takes the sting out of minor trip mishaps, such as lost baggage and delayed flights. Check out Squaremouth to compare plans and choose one that fits your family.
